Helldivers 2 Will No Longer Require PSN Linking on PC, Sony Says

Recently, Sony made itself unpopular by saying it would force Helldivers 2 players to link up a PlayStation Network account on PC. The backlash was immediate, with many players taking to Steam to review bomb the game. Since then, the publisher has turned on the idea.

“We’ve heard your feedback”

In a post on X earlier today, Sony announced that the requirement to link Steam to PSN in order to play Helldivers 2 on PC “will not be moving forward.” The post goes on to say that the company is “still learning what is best for PC players.”

The initial intent to require PlayStation Network accounts was met with severe criticism from Steam users, many of whom were not interested in signing up for a Sony-specific account for one game.

Despite the popularity of Helldivers 2 since it launched earlier this year, the insistence on having a PSN account has left the game a little beat up on Steam. Currently, recent reviews on the platform have it down as “mostly negative” with “mixed” for all reviews. This is quite a drop from being well-received when the game was released in February.

At the time of writing, the third-party website SteamDB has registered more than 154,000 negative reviews over the last few days. The game has also dropped one place on Steam’s Top Sellers list, though it’s hard to say whether that’s due to the controversy.

Now that Sony has confirmed it’s going back on its initial plan, it will be interesting to see whether Helldivers 2 can recover its former good reputation.
