Baldur’s Gate 3’s Larian Studios Plans to ‘Move Away From D&D’

Baldur’s Gate 3 was undoubtedly one of the biggest releases of 2023, but it looks as though a fourth entry may not be on the cards. It turns out that developer Larian Studios is looking to move away from its action RPG series.

“We are a company of big ideas”

During an address at this year’s GDC (as reported by PC Gamer), Larian’s CEO Swen Vincke has said the Baldur’s Gate series will “always have a warm spot in our heart,” but the team is moving on from it. Vincke adds he is “not going to make new expansions which everybody is expecting.”

Instead, the company is going to move onto something different, with a view to “making a new thing” while stepping back from the long-running D&D games.

As such, anyone expecting anything after Baldur’s Gate 3 may be disappointed, with Vincke confirming that there won’t be a follow-up installment in the series, at least from Larian.

However, the franchise may not be entirely dead. The Dungeons & Dragons license for BG3 is held by Wizards of the Coast, which could decide to hand a new game project over to a different studio in the future.

What this new idea Larian will be developing cannot be said at this stage, so it’s hard to say how much of a departure it could potentially be from the fantasy RPG series.

When it was released back in August last year, Baldur’s Gate 3 was met with immense praise. It went on to win multiple awards, including Best Storytelling and Best Visual Design at the Golden Joystick Awards, as well as claiming the title of Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023.
