New Witcher Game Development Update Given by CD Projekt Red

While CD Projekt Red has been busy working on Cyberpunk 2077‘s upcoming DLC, Phantom Liberty, some of the team has been hard at work on the next installment in the Witcher series.

Over 250 strong so far

In a recent earnings call, studio CEO Adam Kiciński said there were around 260 people working on Polaris, the codename for the new Witcher game, by the end of July.

He goes on to say that once Phantom Liberty is out, “we will transfer a big part of the team” to the new project. Essentially, it sounds like CDPR is going to be putting a lot of its resources into The Witcher going forward.

This new entry will be the beginning of a new saga for the developer’s beloved RPG series. Obviously, at this time, there’s no telling when the next Witcher installment will be coming out, but the team is hoping to release each subsequent entry in the new trilogy “within a six-year period after the first.”

As a change of pace, CD Projekt Red will be abandoning its in-house REDengine, which has powered all the games in the series, as well as Cyberpunk. Instead, the team will be using Unreal Engine 5 for future Witcher games, citing the development software’s advantages and its praiseworthy ability to “create fantastic open worlds easily.”

On top of that, the studio is also working on an official remake of 2007’s The Witcher, the first in the franchise that introduced the world to Geralt of Rivia.

The third installment (2015’s The Wild Hunt) is considered by many to be one of the greatest RPGs of its generation, if not of all time. As such, many will be holding out that this new The Witcher saga will be just as impressive.
