Post Quake 2, Nightdive Studios CEO Renews Interest in an Unreal Remaster

Just a couple of weeks ago, classic id Software FPS Quake 2 was given a remaster, and now the developer behind the project is interested in reviving the original Unreal game.

Reaching out to Epic Games

In a recent post on Twitter, Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick has expressed deep interest in reviving Epic Games‘ 1998 shooter.

Reaching out to Epics’ Tim Sweeney, Kick says that he and the rest of the team would be “honored to be the care takers [sic] of Unreal.” He reminds Sweeney of the work Nightdive has already done on remastering Quake and porting Doom, adding that “it’d be in good hands.”

Whether this will ever come to fruition remains to be seen, but judging by the comments under Kick’s tweet, more than a few people would love to see Unreal make a comeback.

This is also not the first time Nightdive Studios has reached out to the people at Epic Games. In June 2022, Kick posted a similar message (about a year after the first Quake remaster was released), urging Sweeney to consider a possible remaster of the late 90’s FPS.

The remastered version of Quake 2 has been going down well with fans, especially those who fondly remember the original 1997 release. Steam users have been leaving a lot of positive remarks about the work Nightdive has put into the iconic shooter.

This revamped version of the game implements modern lighting techniques and tweaks to characters models to give a boost to the dated visuals. It also adds in some quality-of-life changes, such as a weapon wheel, as well as introducing accessibility features.

On top of that, you’ll find the base game along with the two official expansion packs and a brand-new mission from Wolfenstein developer MachineGames. Essentially, this is the ultimate way to experience Quake 2, either for the first time or if you just want to relive some nostalgic PC gaming.

Hopefully, Unreal will get a similar treatment, but it won’t happen until Epic Games approves such a project.
