Guybrush Threepwood on mobile

It’s been a long while since we’ve seen an entry in the Monkey Island series – with the last one being 2009’s Tales of Monkey Island – but last year’s installment has finally seen the…well…return of one Guybrush Threepwood.

For those who didn’t get a chance to check out Return to Monkey Island when it launched last year, at least now you’ll be given a chance to try it on your small screens when it comes to the Apple and Google stores in a matter of weeks.

Born from the LucasArts era of the early 1990s, the Monkey Island games are known for their witty and humorous writing. It’s also where Psychonauts and Grim Fandango mastermind Tim Schafer got his early start in video game design, co-writing and programming the first entry, The Secret of Monkey Island.

Return to Monkey Island was helmed by Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, two of the original creators who worked alongside Schafer in the early days. The latest installment represents the first time Gilbert and Grossman have been active in the series for years, though the latter was a director of design on Tales of Monkey Island.

When it released, Return to Monkey Island was praised, surprising in this day and age when point-and-click adventure games are not as popular as they once were. The fact that it has something of a loyal fan base which grew up playing LucasArts titles probably helped it become one of our favorite PC games of 2022.
