Notch Leaving Mojang, Doesn’t See Himself as a “Real Game Developer”

Markus "Notch" Persson, the main man behind the indie sensation Minecraft, is leaving his studio Mojang now that Microsoft is the new proud owner.

In a post on his website, Persson explained the reasoning behind his departure, making it clear it's not (nor was it ever) his desire to be some big shot video game developer.

I don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world.

Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me it’s changed games. I never meant for it to do either. It’s certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.

Notch went on to close out the post by driving home the point that his decision to leave wasn't just about Microsoft's purchase, but comes from a more personal place, by saying, "It’s not about the money. It’s about my sanity."

Do you think Mojang is still in good hands despite the departure of its central figure? Do you trust Microsoft to treat the Minecraft brand properly? We want to hear your thoughts, so make them known in the comments below.
