Steam Surpasses 8 Million Concurrent Users

Steam users piled on the service over the weekend as a massive blow-out of deals took the Steam Summer Sale out with a bang, bringing over eight million users online at the same time and breaking the service's previous records.

While PC gaming remains expensive and cumbersome for console-dedicated gamers, it's hard not to take a look at the Steam storefront and find a few games your laptop can run just fine and I suspect that's exactly what happened in this case.

The Steam & Game Stats page displays current users and a persistent peak statistic for comparison. Even at the time of this posting, several hours after the peak, more than seven million users are online.

With so many deals and tons of great free-to-play games, including the company's own hits like Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2, Steam's dominance over the digital distribution space can't be shaken.

Were you one of 8 million on Steam this weekend? If so, what were you playing? I bought a few games while they were on sale, including a trio of Assassin's Creed games I used to own on console. Here's hoping Steam continues to grow and evolve its service.
