Amazon Announces Smartphone, Dubbed Fire Phone

During a special event in Seattle, Amazon announced and revealed the new Fire Phone (Amazon product page) which will cost $649 for a 32GB model off-contract.

For AT&T customers who don't mind renewing or signing a new contract, the phone will cost as little as $199. The device comes with a 4.7-inch Gorilla Glass display in case you drop your phone in the actual Amazon. With a 2.2GHz processor, an Adreno 330 GPU, and 2GB of RAM, the Fire Phone should handle most modern mobile games, though I'm wondering how custom the firmware will be or whether Android enthusiasts will be able to hack the phone as easily as other devices.

The Fire Phone also features a 13-megapixel camera, "590 nits of brightness", and a "circular polarizer" and I use quotes here because I have no clue what that stuff means.

Do you have a Kindle Fire or a Fire HD? I almost bought one a few months back but without the ability to dig into the operating system, I decided against it. Where will Amazon's aggressive expansion of the Fire hardware brand go next?
