There was a bit of confusion circulating the web yesterday. A report that originated from GameStop mentioned that the new PS3 model, CECH-3000, would require HDMI for HD output. That might not sound like such a big deal considering that most of us are already using HDMI cables anyway, but gamers with HDTVs that feature component cables as their only means of an HD connection were feeling unsettled.
Sony has clarified, saying that games can still be played in HD via component connection, but that Blu-ray movies will require an HDMI connection for HD output. The new PS3 is in compliance with Advanced Access Content System (AACS) standards, which say that full HD resolutions are limited to HDMI and DVI connections, due to their support of High-bandwidth Digital Copyright Protection (HDCP).
Starting in 2014, all Blu-ray players will ship without a component connection to comply with these AACS standards. Sony is getting the compliance out of the way a little early with their new PS3 model.
Aside from this minor change in HD support, the new CECH-3000 model draws less power, lowering your electric bill very slightly.
