Unreal Tournament Goes Free So Development Community Can Earn Money

The new Unreal Tournament will be free for players and the Unreal Engine 4 development community surrounding the game but the team at Epic Games have revealed that doing so allows for a "fundamentally generous" marketplace that adds wealth to the game and to the young developers around it.

While the game and planning were revealed in a livestream last week, Epic's senior programmer and project lead Steve Polge told VG24/7 that making the game free allowed the team "to succeed by doing the right thing for the community, and it keeps all of us, at Epic and in the community, on the same page with what we are trying to accomplish."

"The marketplace for Unreal Tournament will be an extension of the Unreal Engine marketplace, which you'll be able to see taking shape with every update to Unreal Engine 4." Polge and the team at Epic Games hope that Unreal Tournament will enable gamers to pick up the coding and design tools and start creating new pieces of UT or new games altogether, not unlike the work Valve has done in bringing their community of gamers into development with Steam Workshop.

"For the mod community to succeed, we first need to create a successful game that appeals to and sustains a sizable and vibrant community of players. We'll work with our mod developers to support their development needs with the core game platform and we'll make sure it's easy for players to discover mod experiences available in the UT marketplace," Polge said.
