Microsoft has officially announced that Xbox Discord integration has arrived on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One through Discord Voice. However, as designed in July when Discord voice chat was made available to Xbox Insiders, the process of getting Discord to work with an Xbox console is a bit cumbersome as it does not operate through a dedicated app.
How to make Xbox Discord integration work
Here is a list of steps you’ll need to take if you want to join Discord voice channels with your friends on an Xbox console:
- First and foremost, you’ll need to link your Discord account in the Discord mobile app to your Xbox account. Even if you’ve already linked them together, you’ll need to re-link it for this to work correctly.
- Then on the Discord mobile app, you can enter a voice channel or call.
- From there, transfer the call to your Xbox.
Keep in mind that the Discord integration here has a lot of restrictions, as it doesn’t have the same features as those with Xbox party chat. There is no option to invite your friends to a game, switch over to game chat, or view a person’s Xbox profile card.
You also can’t mix your Discord friends with your Xbox friends, even if they will likely be some overlap between them. Nor can you switch from one voice channel to another like on Discord; you need to end the call, select another voice channel, and then transfer. Audio through the Discord voice channel also can’t run through Xbox live streaming. If that sounds like a lot of limitations, you’re not wrong.
We’ll need to see how PS5 Discord integration will compete, as it will have a dedicated app arriving in “the coming months,” according to our sister site PlayStation Lifestyle. Sony has a minority investment in Discord, so it’s expected that the app will be solid.
In other news, the Octopath Traveler 2 gameplay trailer and release date have been revealed, and GoldenEye 007 on Xbox Game Pass will unfortunately not have online multipalyer.
