Journalist and presenter Geoff Keighley has revealed that The Expanse gameplay will be shown off at Gamescom 2022 during the Opening Night Live presentation. A “first look” at the game from Telltale Games will make an appearance at the full event at 11am PT/2pm ET/8pm CEST which will be streaming on the official ONL website. Telltale’s adaptation of the critically-acclaimed sci-fi series on Amazon will be made in collaboration with Deck Nine Games. Along with The Wolf Among Us sequel, this game will be a part of the developer’s comeback from bankruptcy in 2018.

The GIF embedded in the tweet above shows a crew member turning in the air, spinning counter-clockwise through a tight corridor. As a brief snippet of pre-alpha footage, it doesn’t reveal too much information except that The Expanse looks like it will be graphically stronger than the studio’s past titles. Let’s hope that the gameplay shown during the event will show how the narrative will work given that Telltale’s strength is having a choice-based story and The Expanse’s strength is in portraying power politics in space.
Telltale’s collaboration with Deck Nine Games is primarily due to the developer’s promise not to make the same mistakes as it did in the past. According to an interview with GameInformer, Telltale’s current employees and leadership want to ensure that there will be “no crunch” and that they can achieve this by outsourcing art to other studios. Distributed development, they said, allows Telltale to keep its costs “manageable” while still allowing for creative freedom.
The game’s official website gives a brief description of the overarching plot, with players taking the role of XO Camina Drummer on the spaceship Artemis. A bloody mutiny happens, though, and you’ll need to make significant choices that will determine the fate of the ship. Given that Artemis is near an asteroid belt, you may also need to help navigate it through the field. No release date or window has been announced thus far for The Expanse, so hopefully it will be revealed during Opening Night Live.
