As Amber Heard looks set to remain in her role as Mera in Aquaman 2, a petition to remove her from the movie has reached 4.6 million signatures while #BoycottAquaman2 trends on Twitter. The increase in interest comes amidst Heard’s filing of a notice of appeal last week against the verdict in her recent defamation court trial against Johnny Depp.
Why 4.6 million people will #BoycottAquaman2
The recent court case between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp saw jurors return a verdict that said they both defamed the other, although Depp was awarded a far bigger compensation payout than Heard. Many fans remain angry that Heard has been allowed to keep her role in Aquaman 2 despite the domestic abuse allegations leveled against her, all while Depp’s career was brought to a halt by the same allegations he faced. The result is a petition for Heard to be removed from Aquaman 2 over these allegations, and 4,622,589 people had signed the petition at the time of writing.
At the moment, there are no plans to recast Mera. The President at Warner Bros. Pictures for DC Comics-based film production, Walter Hamada, testified at the trial that they had considered recasting the part although the main reason for this was actually due to a lack of chemistry between Heard and Aquaman actor Jason Momoa. Ultimately they decided not to do this although it does appear that her role in the movie is being downplayed in any promotional material. The movie wasn’t present at last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, nor was Amber Heard’s Mera shown during any of the panels. As such, fans are planning to boycott the movie instead, so #BoycottAquaman2 has become one of the more recent Twitter trends.
