A possible Overwatch 2 release date of 2022 has been revealed in a new report, which suggests that Activision Blizzard is pushing the anticipated online shooter sequel for a launch sooner than expected. If correct, the report states that the Overwatch 2 launch date will still be 2022 despite earlier reports that it might be delayed to later than next year. The Overwatch 2 release date is reportedly down for Spring 2022, in next year’s Q2.
This report comes via Dexerto, which claims two sources corroborated its release date information. The first is an internal Activision Blizzard source that supposedly told the site that “the word is the dev team has been told to lock in the features the game has, get it fixed and get it shipped” for a release before Summer next year. The second source, a member of franchise management, told the site that “the aim is Q2 of next year” for launching Overwatch 2.
According to the report, a lot of this rush is down to the Overwatch League. “They don’t want to switch game versions in the middle of a season,” the second source supposedly stated. Activision Blizzard apparently sat down to discuss the future with the heads of the Overwatch League, who are allegedly “becoming increasingly disaffected with leadership decisions” regarding the game — with the recent Activision Blizzard lawsuits and the multiple delays to Overwatch 2 being the main sore points. There have apparently even been discussions about delaying the Overwatch season to late in 2022 or the following year, due to the many problems the Overwatch League and Activision Blizzard are encountering.
Regardless, Overwatch 2’s release date may now have been set for Spring or Q2 2022, three years after it was initially announced — which is nothing compared to the wait for most Blizzard games.
