Fatal Frame 5

Fatal Frame 5 is not a Switch exclusive despite Nintendo origins

One of the surprise announcements of the Nintendo E3 Direct show yesterday was a remaster of Fatal Frame 5, otherwise known as Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, for Nintendo Switch. However, according to developer Koei Tecmo, there is no Fatal Frame 5 Switch exclusivity, despite the original game being published by Nintendo itself. So will Fatal Frame 5 PS5  and Xbox Series X versions be released? How about Fatal Frame on PC and the last-gen Xbox One and PS4? Here’s the need-to-know info.

Is Fatal Frame 5 on PS5, PS4, PC, or Xbox?

Fatal Frame 5

Fatal Frame 5 will release on PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch later in 2021.

According to Koei Tecmo, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water will release on all platforms and it is not a Nintendo Switch exclusive, despite being revealed at the Nintendo Direct and being originally a Nintendo-published game for Wii U in 2014. No specific release date has been given other than this year.

The PC release is particularly notable because it’ll mark the first time ever that a game in the Fatal Frame/Project Zero series has made it off consoles. The first three games were only on PS2 and Xbox consoles, but both the fourth and fifth games — Mask of the Lunar Eclipse and Maiden of Black Water — have been Wii or Wii U exclusives, published by Nintendo. If the remaster of Fatal Frame 5 is a success, then Koei Tecmo hopefully may consider a re-release of Fatal Frame 4 too, which didn’t even get a release outside of Japan.

In other news regarding horror games, the mysterious Blue Box Games teased Silent Hill and then immediately recanted it, calling even more attention to the studio. The rumored temporary Switch-exclusive Resident Evil Outrage failed to materialize at E3, but Capcom did confirm that it has Resident Evil Village DLC in the works, but development has “just started.”
