A Sonic Tokyo 2020 skin is on its way for the upcoming Olympics game, with Sonic the Hedgehog appearing as a weird-looking playable character in the title.
Sonic was debuted for the new game during today’s Sonic Central presentation, which celebrated the Sega mascot’s 30th anniversary. The Tokyo 2020 announcement kicked off the show, with it being revealed that players would be able to access a skin that allowed them to “dress up” as the character.
The more realistic version of the character is basically an olympian cosplaying as the mascot, though it definitely has the air of the Sonic Movie’s first design for the character. Thankfully, the Sonic Movie’s creators altered the design, but looks like we’ll be stuck with a comparative replacement in Tokyo 2020.
This isn’t the first time that Sonic has appeared in an Olympics game, of course. He’s previously appeared alongside Nintendo’s mascot in the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series, though this time around he won’t be at the forefront of the multiplayer sports game.
It’s unclear how players will unlock the Sonic skin in Tokyo 2020, though we should receive further information when the game is closer to release. Tokyo 2020 is set to release on PS4 and Xbox One on June 22, 2021.
