In June 2020, Bungie revealed its roadmap for Destiny 2 through 2022. However, that plan has been adjusted a bit with today’s announcement that Destiny 2: The Witch Queen will be delayed until 2022. Additionally, the roadmap has expanded to include a yet-to-be-titled expansion that will launch after Lightfall.
Destiny 2: The Witch Queen release date delayed
Originally, The Witch Queen was supposed to launch in late 2021. However, Bungie has delayed the release date to sometime in early 2022. One of the reasons for the delay is explained in the official blog post as:
“As we’ve been developing The Witch Queen, we realized that we needed this release to be the first of many moments crucial to the story of Destiny. With so much leading to and dependent on what happens in The Witch Queen, we wanted to make sure that we gave ourselves enough time to build out this journey in the right way, starting with an exceptional first chapter in The Witch Queen.”
Both Shadowkeep and Beyond Light were criticized for a lack of content upon release, so the delay may allow Bungie to craft a larger campaign. It sounds like The Witch Queen will be the big kick-off for the next few years of Destiny 2’s story, so it would be great to get more than a few hours of content.
Destiny 2 post-Lightfall expansion announced
In the same blog post from above, Bungie announced that another expansion is planned to follow Lightfall. This campaign will “fully complete our first saga of Destiny.” This might point to it being Destiny 2’s final chapter. If Bungie continues its yearly expansion releases, we wouldn’t see this unnamed entry until 2023-24 at the earliest.
There’s no hints yet as to what the untitled Destiny 2 expansion will contain. Beyond Light introduced Stasis powers but only seemed to set the stage for a larger narrative that will begin in The Witch Queen. It’s likely the unnamed expansion will see the conclusion to the story arc that will be introduced there.
