No, Sony hasn’t stopped PS5 production

The PS5 isn’t dead. Just three months after its November 12, 2020 launch, rumors are swirling that Sony has stopped PlayStation 5 production. Fortunately, however, news of the current-gen console’s demise is based purely on satire.

Has Sony stopped making PS5?

News that the PS5 had apparently ceased production spread online after The Onion, a satirical news website,  published a fictional article. According to the piece, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida made an emotional announcement Thursday morning. Yoshida allegedly thanked PlayStation fans for an “incredible three months” since the launch of the PS5.

In reality, the PS5 is not stopping production in February 2021. Sony is incredibly unlikely to stop PlayStation 5 production anytime soon, as the console is at the beginning of what should be a years-long lifecycle.

After asserting that PS5 production will stop “effective immediately,” the sarcastic news piece goes on to reminisce about all the good times the PlayStation 5 has brought. Exclusives like Astro’s Playroom and The Nioh Collection (both of which are legitimately great, to be fair) receive special mention.

If the mocking tone wasn’t already clear, The Onion goes on to opine that “it’s better to go out on top” than to hang around like Microsoft’s “doddering Xbox Series X.” Of course, the Xbox Series X is still a hot commodity that many prospective buyers are struggling to get hold of.

Supply issues and scalpers are still preventing gamers from getting their hands on PlayStation 5 hardware, too. As such, those in the hunt can rest assured that the PS5 production rumors being circulated are not true. Once again, a hoax article from The Onion has taken on a life of its own.

In other unexpected video games news, Pokemon has partnered with rapper Post Malone to deliver a virtual concert. WWE NXT Superstar Cameron Grimes also has a new gimmick, based on striking it rich by investing in GameStop.
