next ps5 update

Next PS5 update will solve a longstanding issue with 4K games

The next PS5 update will reportedly fix a longstanding issue with 4K HDR games outputting at 120 Hz, a Samsung community manager has seemingly revealed. The next major PlayStation 5 update, which is allegedly set to be rolled out in March 2021, is said to fix this issue.

The PS5 currently struggles with games running in 4K resolution at 120 Hz with High Dynamic Range enabled, with various TV models including Samsung’s being affected by this problem. Thus far, console owners have been forced to reduce their refresh rate or disable HDR altogether, which is a big issue considering these technical improvements are a key reason why people will have made the upgrade to current-gen systems.

Fortunately, Samsung community manager DavidB has seemingly revealed that the console’s next update will rectify this problem. While an exact timeline has yet to be given, DavidB claimed that an update is expected in March that will provide a solution, and that PS5 owners will have to wait until this update is deployed for the unfortunate problem to be fixed.

“The error was localized and Sony is expected to release an update in March to make 4K 120 Hz HDR possible,” DavidB said in a comment on the Samsung official site. “Please keep the Playstation up to date with the latest software. The TV does not need a software update (but we recommend that you always keep the software up-to-date for reasons of stability and security). The TV doesn’t have to be repaired either, so you don’t need to contact support.”

Sony hasn’t officially confirmed that such an update will happen, though it’s expected that Samsung will have been made aware of the company’s timeline for fixing this issue, given that it affects Samsung TVs. While the PS5 not running at its full technical capabilities on these TVs is an issue, if an update is deployed in March, console owners won’t have to wait long for a fix.

Though this update may not be coming to PS5 this month, console owners will still get a treat in February with one of the most jam-packed PS Plus line-ups to date.
