The Xbox Series S storage space can reportedly install fewer than 10 modern console games, revealing another downside of buying the budget-friendly version of the Xbox Series X console.
Most modern console games are available as either a disc or digital download, but purchasing a disc won’t free the player from having to download data to their console’s internal storage. A portion of game files, save data, and post-launch patches will inevitably eat up some of the free space — and now it appears that the Xbox Series S has a surprisingly small amount.

A Redditor has reportedly gotten his hands on an Xbox Series S console a week early, allowing him to provide insight on the console’s capabilities. One of the more surprising reveals was just how small the usable Xbox Series S storage space is: players will reportedly have 364 GB of the 500 GB SSD available for games. That same Redditor also the Xbox Series S install sizes for a handful of games:
- Halo 5 – 97 GB
- The Outer Worlds – 52 GB
- The Witcher 3 – 41 GB
These three games alone already use up nearly half of the available Xbox Series S storage space. While these install sizes are certainly large, none of them compare to the massive amount of storage space required by games such as Call of Duty.
In practical terms, this means that players won’t likely be able to install many modern games on their Xbox Series S console. Games from previous generations can be installed on a USB hard drive, but next-gen titles can only use the somewhat pricey Xbox Series X expandable storage card. The players who want to make the most of their Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership or hoping to have a huge next-gen library will likely need to buy at least one or two expandable storage cards to have everything easily available.
