The Apex Legends Fight or Fright mode is returning just in time for Halloween with a surprising new addition. The game is finally adding Titanfall-style wallrunning to the game, but not in the way that players might expect — it’s going to be exclusive to Shadow Royale.

Halloween is coming to Apex Legends with the return of the Fight or Fright event starting on October 22, 2020. This event first made its debut last year and much of the same content — including last year’s skins — is making a return. This year’s version will feature new cosmetic content and some changes to Shadowfall, including the addition of a surprise for Titanfall veterans.

Apex Legends wallrunning is finally making its debut nearly two years after the game first launched. Although this movement feature was a big part of Titanfall, although it never made its debut in Respawn Entertainment’s Battle Royale game. Skilled players have since discovered a way to do quasi-wallrunning in Apex Legends, but it isn’t quite the same. Now, this movement mechanic is finally debuting as part of the Apex Legends Fight or Fright event.

“Fans of previous Respawn games should keep their eyes peeled for certain…mobility enhancements…when playing as a Shadow Legend,” read the announcement for the Apex Legends Fight or Fright event. The announcement and the trailer for this event both show Shadow Legends using wallrunning.

Unfortunately, wallrunning isn’t going to be added to the base game for regular players. Respawn Entertainment considered adding the feature to the game during its development, but it ultimately decided against including it in at release.

“[Wall] running was enabled [in Apex Legends], but we wanted to make a game where you can anticipate player action, build a plan around and try to get a drop on an opponent – and be rewarded for getting that drop,” Respawn’s Design Director told Press Start.

Wallrunning will only be available in the Apex Legends Shadow Royale game mode, a variant of last year’s Shadowfall game mode. Defeated players will once again respawn in a “Shadow Form” with higher speed and a deadlier melee attack. This year, Shadow Legends will be able to use wallrunning for the first time in the game’s history.

The debut of wallrunning for Shadow Form players will mark the first time that the mechanic is available in the release state of the game. If this year’s Apex Legends Fight or Fright event works out well, it’s possible that Respawn Entertainment may eventually make wallrunning available in normal play in the future. Either way, you’ll be able to try out wallrunning for yourself when the Fight or Fright mode returns on October 22, 2020.
