New Twitch Clip permissions let you choose who can use the feature on your channel

Twitch Clips are a great way to capture those magical streaming moments. However, it can also be used to record videos meant to demean or harass streamers. Thankfully, Twitch has premiered a new feature which will allow users to limit clip creation to specific groups of viewers.

The feature, which is available now, allows you to limit Twitch Clip creation to followers and/or subscribers. Previously, streamers only had the option to turn Clips on or off. With more granular control over clip creation, more users can enjoy the function without worrying about its abuse.

To adjust options for who can clip your stream, you just have to do the following:

  1. Click on your avatar in the upper right corner.
  2. Click on Creator Dashboard.
  3. Select the Preferences dropdown.
  4. Click on Channel.
  5. View the new options located under the Enable Clips slider.

According to Twitch Support, even if your moderators and editors aren’t followers or subscribers, these settings won’t affect their ability to make clips.

This new functionality comes after recent promises to make Twitch a safer place for viewers and streamers. While the clip functionality is usually used to highlight impressive or funny moments, it’s also been used for more nefarious purposes. In particular, female streamers have been the target of harassment in the past by users clipping “creepshots.” In theory, this function should help curb that, as users who follow or subscribe to a streamer are probably less likely to want to cause them harm.

On the opposite side of the coin from this new feature, browsing Twitch Clips could use an overhaul. There’s no easy way to search for clips, and there’s no option to have them move to a moderation cue and approve them on an individual basis. The ability to limit clips to followers and subscribers-only is a step in the right direction, but Twitch has a long way to go when it comes to providing streamers moderation and harassment-prevention tools.
