Hitman 3 is shaping up to be an interesting new entry in the assassination franchise and things just got a whole lot better: the Hitman 3 PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade is going to be free according to IO Interactive.
“Yes, we’re doing a next-gen upgrade for consoles and yes, it’s free,” read the Hitman 3 pre-order page (via Nibel). “Console players can buy (including pre-order) a digital edition of HITMAN 3 on the current generation of platforms and receive a free upgrade to the next-gen version of the game for no additional cost.”
“To break that down a bit more, here’s how it’ll work:” the page continued. “On PlayStation, when you buy a digital PS4 version of HITMAN 3 from the PlayStation Store, you can download the PS5 version at no extra cost when it launches. On Xbox, HITMAN 3 leverages Smart Delivery allowing access to both the Xbox One title and Xbox Series X title when available.”
The free Hitman 3 PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade is certainly welcome news to console gamers, especially with situations like NBA 2K21 charging a premium for its next-gen editions and the newly-revealed Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War effectively doing the same with its Cross-Gen Bundles.
However, the information on next-gen upgrades isn’t entirely clear. Reading it plainly, it seems that buying a physical Xbox One version of Hitman 3 would entitle you to a digital upgrade on Xbox Series X but buying a physical PS4 version of Hitman 3 would not entitle you to a digital upgrade on PS5. We’ve reached out to IO Interactive on this matter and will update the article when we receive a reply.
Either way, the free Hitman 3 PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade is a good move by IO Interactive. You’ll be able to play Hitman 3 on PC and consoles starting on January 20, 2021.
