Marvel’s Avengers adds Spider-Man as PlayStation exclusive hero

The Avengers wouldn’t be complete without Spider-Man and the upcoming game is no exception. The web-slinger is coming to Marvel’s Avengers early next year as free DLC, but only on certain platforms. Like his full console game from 2018 and PS5 launch title, Spider-Man will only be playable on the PS4 and PS5.

Crystal Dynamics fittingly announced this on the PlayStation Blog, which was rumored to be the case from an odd retail listing that first leaked Peter Parker’s appearance. In the PS Blog post, Associate Art Director Jeff Adams described Spider-Man without actually showing what he will look like in action.

He noted that Spider-Man’s playstyle will be “graceful and light,” be full of different gadgets, and allow him to seamlessly go from combat to traversal. There are other vague nods to his look (including what artists influenced the team) and how you’ll be able to customize him, but that’s a given for a game so dependent on loot. Narrative-wise, Adams only said that he would have to “evolve to take on global threats.”

However, we didn’t hear about who will be playing Spidey, which likely means that Yuri Lowenthal, Parker’s voice in the 2018 game, likely won’t be reprising his role for this game. He has not tweeted about it either way, but given how Sony’s Iron Man VR also starred a different actor as Tony Stark, it’s not wise to expect MCU-levels of crossovers.

Giving Spider-Man only to PlayStation owners makes it easy to see why the game won’t be supporting full crossplay. Creative Director Shaun Escayg said in June that the title will only support crossplay within console families (PS4 and PS5 can play together and Xbox One can only play owners with Xbox Series X, PC support is unknown).

This isn’t the first time Sony has been in bed with the game either as its upcoming beta will be exclusive to PS4 for two weeks — one week for pre-orders and another for everyone on PS4. That first wave starts on August 7 while Xbox owners can’t enlist until August 21.
