PS4 DualShock 4 won’t work with PS5 games, Sony confirms

The PS5 will allow you to use use the PS4 DualShock 4 controller, Sony has revealed, though it won’t be able to play PS5 games. The console will also be compatible with the PlayStation Eye Camera, with a separate adapter for the PS5 being available at no additional cost for existing owners. This will ensure that the PS VR will be functional with the next-gen console.

Sony announced the PS5’s compatibility with current-gen peripherals in a blog post today, noting how the PS4 DualShock 4 is compatible with the next PlayStation console. However, the DualShock 4 won’t be able to play PS5 games — the controller will only be compatible with PS4 games.

“We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller,” Sony wrote.

Here’s the full list of peripherals that will be compatible with the PS5:

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

All in all, it isn’t surprising news for the PS5. With the DualSense offering new features like haptic feedback and an improved middle button, Sony will clearly want to take advantage of these new additions and will only be able to do so if enough people make the upgrade to the new controller. Still, if you want to use your PS5 to play your PS4 games, too, then you’ll be able to hook up your DualShock 4 and do so.
