Skate 4 finally announced at EA Play 2020

No video game series has nailed skateboarding action quite as well EA’s Skate series. Unfortunately, interest in continuing the series’ development seemed to simply fade away around 2010. But fans were not going to let it die — they wanted Skate 4, and they were perfectly happy shouting it from the rooftops. Well, their cries have been heard, as the team at Electronic Arts announced during EA Play 2020 that a new game in the Skate series would finally become a reality.

Honestly, it’s hard to believe that it’s been over a decade since we heard any proper news about the Skate series. Skate 3 released way, way back in May of 2010, after which Electronic Arts seemed content to leave the IP in the basement collecting dust. In 2016, EA shut down the Skate 3 servers, which felt like a deathblow to both the game and the entire series.

“You commented this into existence.”

Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there. EA decided, seemingly at random, to reactivate the Skate 3 servers in 2018. What followed was a massive influx of fans asking if a new entry to the Skate series was on the horizon. Thanks to the EA Play 2020 presentation, we now know that Skate will live on.

That’s about all we know, though. While a new Skate game was indeed mentioned at the tail end of the presentation, no other details were confirmed. Speaking during the stream, Creative Director Cuz Parry and Game Director Deran Chung provided the only pieces of information we have so far:

“We’ve been waiting years, honestly, to make the right game, at the right time, with the right idea,” Chung said. “And we’re really pleased to say that we’re here.”

“We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re stoked, and this is just the beginning,” Parry said. “We want to thank you for your passion, your patience, and all the support you’ve shown us to get to this point. It’s amazing. You commented this into existence.”

You can finally stop holding your breath, Skate fans. A new Skate game was confirmed at EA Play 2020, putting an end to a decade worth of pleading, begging, and perhaps less-earnest forms of request. We don’t know much about the game yet, but rest assured, we’re likely to hear more about it very soon.
