David Hayter says he’d ‘enthusiastically’ reprise Snake role

Metal Gear is essentially a dormant franchise; a sad irony given the title of the last game in the series. But there’s always a chance that it could continue in some form, be it a sequel or remake. And if that happens, it wouldn’t feel quite right without the voice of Snake himself, Kiefer Sutherland David Hayter. While it makes sense that he’d be bitter about his odd absence in the last numbered title, he said he would react “enthusiastically” if offered the chance to slither back into the iconic role.

Hayter spoke about this in an interview (around the 8:13 mark) on IGN’s Up At Noon show. When prompted about how he’d react if asked to return to a remake of Metal Gear Solid (or, presumably, its sequels), he did not hide his desire to come back.

“Look, I love Snake,” he said. “I love doing that character. And as people know, I’ll do it at the drop of a hat. So if they wanted to bring me back to remake those games, I’d certainly be thrilled to do so.”

Hayter hasn’t played Snake in a Metal Gear Solid game in quite some time. He voiced the bandana-wearing badass in 2010’s Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker but did not return for either part of Metal Gear Solid 5. He did, however, reprise his role for Snake in 2017’s Super Bomberman R and 2018’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Konami also hasn’t proved that it is completely committed to making games again. Contra: Rogue Corps didn’t go over well with critics and the company doesn’t have any big announced titles at the moment. There are rumors floating around about a new Silent Hill game (or games), but nothing has been officially confirmed.

In fact, Konami debunked those rumors but in doing so slyly hinted that Silent Hill is possibly coming back in some capacity. Hopefully, that doesn’t mean a Pachinko machine that hones in on your deepest fears while sucking away your money. That almost sounds Silent Hill-esque in and of itself since few things are scarier than seeing a franchise die in such a manner.

Regardless, it would be a great sign to see Konami return to Metal Gear, be it a remake, reboot, or some sort of sequel, granted it had the necessary love and care behind it. And getting Hayter on board would be a solid first step in proving just that.
