Half-Life: Alyx without VR

Half-Life: Alyx without VR was accidentally left in game by Valve

Earlier this week, Valve’s Robin Walker said that he wouldn’t be surprised if people make Half-Life: Alyx no-VR mods. Now, we’ve learned that the ability to play Half-Life: Alyx without VR already exists… and it was accidentally left in the game by Valve.

Valve News Network’s Tyler McVicker recently examined a tester’s version of the game that had leaked. This version was only distributed to certain development partners and it contained a curious game mode where you could play Half-Life: Alyx without VR.

ALSO: Half-Life: Alyx Easter eggs are pretty damn insane

There’s a bit of good news and a lot of bad news. The good news is that this development build was apparently leaked, so modders will probably be able to use this as a framework to figure out how to make Half-Life: Alyx work without VR.

The bad news, however, is much more substantial. Firstly, this non-VR testing version is lacking several critical functions like being able to use a key. Secondly, it’s just not as much fun. If modders want to make the game work without VR, they’re going to have a lot of work ahead of them. Check out VNN’s video below to see it in action.
