PETA Animal Crossing Vegan Guide

PETA asks Animal Crossing players to avoid ‘speciesism,’ gives terrible tips

A PETA Animal Crossing Vegan Guide has been released, asking players to avoid “speciesism.” What’s worse, it gives players some tips for Animal Crossing: New Horizons that are downright terrible.

Among the advice in the guide is that players should “cut [Tom Nook] some slack” as real-world tanookis are “beaten, anally electrocuted, gassed, or skinned alive.” It also mentions how several other animals represented in the game will often face real-world maltreatment, using Axel the elephant and Agnes the pig as examples.

Here is what the PETA Animal Crossing Vegan Guide says you should not do in the game:

  • Fishing
  • Bug-catching
  • Putting animals in the museum
  • Build a doghouse

Furthermore, their guide offers some tips that are not really the most optimal way to play the game. As an example, they highlight that you can eat fruit and smash rocks… which deprives you of a renewable resource on your home island. (Generally, it’s not a good idea to break the rocks on your own island so you can get goods from them the following day.)

Finally, PETA shows players several ways that players can profess their vegan views through their passport, custom designs, and bulletin messages, with one such message advocating a “[zero-tolerance] policy” on speciesism.

Of course, following this advice would ruin most of your opportunities to advance in the game. It may be commendable to highlight the plight of some of the world’s worst-treated animals, but a colorful, family-friendly game filled with virtual critters is probably not the best place to do it.
