GDC 2020 postponed indefinitely following coronavirus outbreak

GDC 2020 has been postponed indefinitely after an overwhelming number of publishers and developers pulled out of the event. Sony, Activision, Epic Games, and more withdrew from the event amid concerns over the coronavirus outbreak, with companies attempting to keep their employees safe from the virus.

GDC organizers posted an official statement announcing they would be canceling the March event, with plans to move it later in the year.

The statement reads:

“After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March.

Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we’re genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time .

We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.”

GDC also posted additional information, saying that conference and expo attendees would be receiving refunds in full, and that those who had made hotel reservations inside the GDC room block would not have to pay penalties or fees associated with their reservations.

GDC 2020 organizers said that they were looking to host a GDC event in the summer, though no official date has been given. The show is working with its partners to “finalize the details,” and plans to share more details in the coming weeks.
