Cyberpunk 2077 players who purchase the game on Xbox One can make the upgrade to the Xbox Series X version of the game for free, CD Projekt Red has revealed. This comes in the wake of Microsoft’s announcement that it will allow developers to choose if they want their games to feature a free Xbox Series X upgrade.
“Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades,” CD Projekt Red tweeted. “Owners of #Cyberpunk2077 for Xbox One will receive the Xbox Series X upgrade for free when available.”
This will mean that those who purchase Cyberpunk 2077 will also own the game on Xbox Series X, if they choose to purchase Microsoft’s next console. There’s no word on if save data will also carry over to the new console, or if players will have to start afresh when making the jump to next-gen.

The topic of cross-platform upgrades between Xbox Series X and the Xbox One was mentioned in a new Xbox development blog posted by boss Phil Spencer.
“We’re making the commitment to use Smart Delivery on all our exclusive Xbox Game Studios titles, including Halo Infinite, ensuring you only have to purchase a title once in order to play the best available version for whichever Xbox console they choose to play on,” Spencer wrote. “This technology is available for all developers and publishers, and they can choose to use it for titles that will be release on Xbox One first and come to the Xbox Series X later.”
This is a big move for Microsoft. The current console generation saw developers releasing various remasters of their last-gen games, though Xbox Series X will negate this by way of allowing players to make the jump for free, complete with the visual and performance enhancements they’d expect on a new and improved console. It remains to be seen if Sony will respond in kind with the PS5.
