Cliff Bleszinski wants to return to ‘too woke’ Gears of War as consultant

Cliff Bleszinski has outstretched an offer to Microsoft to return to the Gears of War franchise as a consultant. The Gears creator also followed up on his comments yesterday that “shoehorned diversity” and his personal politics were a reason for LawBreakers‘ failure, responding to a fan who said he shouldn’t make Gears “too ‘woke,'” replying: “They [The Coalition] kinda already did if you didn’t notice.”

Bleszinski took to Twitter to say the “offer still stands to consult on the Gears franchise,” adding that ideas for the future of series were “sitting on the cutting room floor.”

In addition, Bleszinski noted that there was an idea he had for Gears of War 4 that new developer The Coalition “never did.”

Bleszinski also responded to a reference to yesterday’s controversy, after a follower told him that he doesn’t “wanna make gears too ‘woke.'” The former Epic Games director said that The Coalition “kinda already did”:

Since his departure from Epic, The Coalition made Kait Diaz the focus of Gears 5, the first time that a female character has been the central protagonist in a game in the series. The latest entry also had pride flags equippable in its multiplayer mode. It’s unclear which decisions have made Bleszinski consider its new direction as “woke.”

Bleszinski’s tweets about Gears are seemingly related to The Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson’s decision to step down. Fergusson is moving to Activision Blizzard in order to help with development on Diablo 4, leaving The Coalition without a leader. However, the Boss Key Productions co-founder has only discussed consulting on the Gears series, not returning to the franchise full-time.
