The Outer Worlds Nintendo Switch is coming (but it won’t have a cartridge)

The Outer Worlds Nintendo Switch has been announced, but it might not be exactly what you’d expect. Fans have been looking forward to playing The Outer Worlds on Nintendo’s hybrid handheld consoles and their wishes have come true… more or less.

Gematsu reports on the announcement that The Outer Worlds Nintendo Switch version has been quietly under production and will be launched very soon. In fact, it will be available in both physical form and digitally on the Nintendo eShop on March 6, 2020.

Unfortunately, the physical edition is going to be lacking something rather critical for a boxed copy: the cartridge. That’s right, the physical release of The Outer Worlds for the Nintendo Switch is more or less just going to be a download code in a box, something that’s sure to upset more than a few fans who don’t have the best download speeds or might be running low on space.

We also don’t know how much space the game is going to take up on your Nintendo Switch console. As a point of comparison, The Witcher 3 is a massive 28.1 GB in size according to that game’s Nintendo eShop page. It’s certainly possible that The Outer Worlds Nintendo Switch might be smaller in size, but it could just as easily be larger if the folks at Private Division and Obsidian Entertainment weren’t able to get the file size under control.

Despite the downsides, it’s never been a better time to get into the game. The game’s community manager announced that story DLC would be on the way sometime in 2020. That’s surely going to add even more problems for the already-limited storage space on the Nintendo Switch, so it’s probably best that you start freeing up some space now.

Either way, you’ll be paying the same price regardless of whether you buy the physical release (that is, a download code in a box) or a digital code off of the Nintendo eShop. You’ll be able to get your hands on The Outer Worlds for Nintendo Switch at the pricce of $59.99 or your regional equivalent on March 6, 2020.
