We got more information on the Super Nintendo World theme park by Universal Studios, previously announced to be opening in Japan. We now know the park will open its gates sometime this summer before the commencement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
This news comes via Kurumi Mori (@rumireports), a reporter with Bloomberg. She attended a Super Nintendo World Global Kick-Off Presentation that filled attendees in on some of what parkgoers can expect.
A central aspect of the Super Nintendo World experience will be the Power Up Band. Six bands were shown during the conference: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, and Yoshi. These Mario-themed wristbands likely powered via NFC, will link with a smartphone app and allow parkgoers to collect digital coins and compete with others. The preview of the app during the conference also indicates that you’ll be able to collect virtual stamps at the park. Senior Vice President, Chief Creative Officer of Universal Creative, likened the experience to “a life-size, living video game.”

The first Super Nintendo World park will, as stated above, come to Osaka this year. However, there are plans to bring the park to Hollywood, California, and Orlando, Florida, as well as Singapore. Unfortunately, there are no timetables for these park openings available yet.
Information on the rides and attractions that will be available at Super Nintendo World is sparse. However, we did get a trailer for the park featuring Galantis and Charli XCX that told us absolutely nothing. There’s a lot of running around and Nintendo stuff, but not an iota of info about what the park is actually going to be like. It just wouldn’t be Nintendo without cryptic, fluffy advertising, though.
Like most things Nintendo, Super Nintendo World will likely be worth the wait. We’re eager to see how it turns out, and we’ll bring you more news on this park as it becomes available.
