Hyperkin’s newest RetroN console is the RetroN Jr., an adorably cubic device that can play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games on a TV in 720p resolution. The RetroN console line is well known for its ability to play games from multiple retro systems on one device.
Originally announced as an April Fool’s joke in 2017, the RetroN Jr. is now a very real console. At CES 2020, Hyperkin (via Gizmodo) revealed the latest version of the console, which does not yet have a set price or release date. A slot in the top of the RetroN Jr. is compatible with all three of the aforementioned Game Boy cartridge types, and the console has both HDMI and composite ports for video and audio out.

A port on the back of the RetroN Jr. allows for the connection of a USB-C power cable, and a headphone jack on the front allows for headphone or speaker use. Each console also ships with a controller. According to Gizmodo, Hyperkin is considering adding a Game Boy Link Cable port to the console, but the company is not yet sure if this would be used for multiplayer or just for game data transfers.
Several other options already exist for playing Game Boy games on a TV screen, such as the Game Cube’s Game Boy Player, but many of these devices are expensive, rare, or low-quality. Depending on the quality of the RetroN Jr.’s emulation (and its price), the small console could be a game-changer for those looking to play these classic games on a bigger screen.
