GRIS Grease TV3

Spanish broadcaster mixes up GRIS with Grease movie game

Nomada Studios’ visually charming platformer GRIS cleaned up nicely at The Game Awards 2019winning the award for Games For Impact. Unfortunately, a Spanish television station got a wee bit confused, accidentally showing imagery for a video game based on the John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John movie Grease instead of some art from GRIS. No, really.

If you’re somehow unfamiliar with GRIS, it’s a platformer game that was developed by Nomada Studio and published by Devolver Digital. GRIS is an entirely wordless experience, featuring the titular voiceless girl working her way through a world completely devoid of color. As she moves throughout the world, she solves puzzles and brings back colors one at a time by collecting stars and restoring a constellation, all set to a fantastic musical track.

ALSO: No, this PS5 leak is probably not real

To an English-language speaker, this might seem like an impossible mistake. However, GRIS — the Spanish word for “grey” — is more or less phonetically identical to “Grease” when pronounced in Spanish, and that’s probably how this silly mistake happened.

Spanish-language gaming site Hobby Consolas reported on the gaffe, highlighting a tweet from Spanish gaming journalist Albert Garcia. Amazingly, the show on the Spanish television station TV3 actually got the video portion of the presentation correct the first time around, showing footage from the game GRIS.

Actually GRIS

However, once they cut back to the studio, the presenter was standing in front of a large television screen that didn’t show imagery from Nomada Studios’ acclaimed game. Rather, it showed a collage of imagery from Grease The Official Video Game, a cartoonish 2010 title for the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii.

Presumably, this was an honest mistake that happened behind the scenes in production. One guy was responsible for the video shown on screen and got the correct title, while a separate person responsible for the background screen on the live set mistook GRIS for the homophone Grease and put up the wrong graphics. It’s a delightfully silly mistake, but at least developer Conrad Roset seems to be taking it in stride.
