John Woo’s Stranglehold surprise launches on GOG

John Woo’s Stranglehold has surprise-launched on DRM-free digital games retailer GOG. While you might not be familiar with Stranglehold, you might be a tad more familiar with the John Woo film Hard Boiled that serves as the basis of this pretty cool third-person shooter.

A press release announced the return of this the 2007 game John Woo’s Stranglehold to modern systems, highlighting the fast-paced gameplay and destructible level environments.

In John Woo’s Stranglehold, players take on the role of Inspector Tequila, represented in the game by the likeness of his film actor, Chow Yun-Fat. The game features the same amazing gun battles that John Woo fans are well familiar with, including some gaming innovations of the era like bullet time.

The game’s Wikipedia page has more details about the plot. In Hong Kong, a policeman has gone missing. A ransom demand is given, requesting that a single police officer make an appearance at the Kowloon market. The chief thinks this is a trap and wants to send a squad in, but Inspector Tequila disobeys his orders and heads in alone. He soon finds himself assailed by numerous Triad gangsters, proving the chief’s suspicions correct and barely managing to make it out of the shootout alive.

This isn’t just a throwaway film license, either — Mr. Woo himself had a hand in the game’s creation, which probably owes to its cinematic look and feel. But it still features tons of Hong Kong-style action that fans of his films and newcomers alike are sure to enjoy.

If you’re keen on a sweet third-person shooter experience with fast-paced action and more bullets than a gun store, you can pick up John Woo’s Stranglehold on GOG right now at the price of $9.99 or your regional equivalent. In the meantime, you can check out the Stranglehold trailer below.
