Google expects game performance will ‘improve’ on Stadia

Google has responded to criticisms of the Stadia, saying that it expects games will improve on the service in the future. This has come after it was discovered that games were not running in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, as was advertised.

Google Stadia games were put under the microscope after its launch, with early adopters learning that games such as Destiny 2 rendered at 1080p, failing to reach the 4K resolution promised by Google. As such, 9to5google published an article stating that the company was “exaggerating” the power of the Stadia.

Google has now responded to these criticisms, basically saying that the Stadia is capable of streaming at 4K and 60 FPS, but that it’s in the hands of developers to hit that benchmark.

Google Stadia Controller and Chromecast

The full statement from Google is below:

“Stadia streams at 4K and 60 FPS – and that includes all aspects of our graphics pipeline from game to screen: GPU, encoder and Chromecast Ultra all outputting at 4k to 4k TVs, with the appropriate internet connection. Developers making Stadia games work hard to deliver the best streaming experience for every game. Like you see on all platforms, this includes a variety of techniques to achieve the best overall quality. We give developers the freedom of how to achieve the best image quality and framerate on Stadia and we are impressed with what they have been able to achieve for day one.

We expect that many developers can, and in most cases will, continue to improve their games on Stadia. And because Stadia lives in our data centers, developers are able to innovate quickly while delivering even better experiences directly to you without the need for game patches or downloads.”

So according to Google, the reasoning behind games not running at a native 4K resolution in 60 FPS isn’t because the technology is incapable of doing so, but because developers are still working on hitting that sweet spot. Hopefully, Stadia owners will get to play more games at the resolution the Stadia is capable of achieving in the future.
