The Witcher Season 2

Netflix’s The Witcher renewed for second season before premiere

It seems that Geralt has plenty of adventures ahead of him on the small screen. Netflix has tweeted out confirmation that its series based on The Witcher franchise will last for at least a second season. The show, which stars Henry Cavill as the title character, is set to premiere its first set of episodes on December 20, 2019.

Although known mostly because of CD Project Red’s series of blockbuster games, The Witcher originated as a series of Polish fantasy novels. Here is the synopsis of the upcoming series from Netflix:

The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. The story of the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified.

ALSO: The Witcher Netflix series is a ‘very adult show,’ according to showrunner

Despite the games appealing to a wide audience, showrunner Lauren Hissrich has said that the Netflix version will be in line with the adult themes of the source material. Hissrich also worked on Netflix’s Daredevil and expects similar results here. “I’ve been rewatching dailies and my kids aren’t allowed to look at the screen anymore after one of them snuck around and saw something they shouldn’t have seen and it scared him.”

While it could be seen as such, the move to renew a show before the premiere is not unexpected. Netflix is generally known for keeping most of its original programming around for two to three seasons before canceling them due to rising costs. The same will probably be the case for The Witcher in its current incarnation, so hopefully, the creators can craft a satisfying story arc in the time that they do have. Fans of the franchise will likely not get a virtual hit from Geralt either way, as developer CD Project Red is hard at work with Cyberpunk 2077.
