Report: Persona 5 Royal makes you rebuy your DLC

Persona 5 Royal recently launched in Japan, giving fans over there a chance to buy Atlus’ updated RPG before the rest of the world. However, it seems that the game itself isn’t the only thing fans will have to buy again. Early reports indicate that Persona 5 Royal forces players to rebuy DLC from the original game.

The reports originally came from fans on Reddit who have imported the Japanese release of the game. Much to the dismay of these fans, not only does Persona 5 Royal not come with the previous DLC packs for Persona 5, it actually requires players to purchase these DLC packs again.

A quick look over at the Japanese PlayStation store confirms these reports. On Persona 5 Royal‘s Japanese PSN store page, the first paid DLC packs that are shown are the “Persona Costume and BGM” sets from Persona 2, Persona 3, and Persona 4. Persona 5 also received the exact same DLC sets in April of 2017. Digging deeper shows even more DLC sets that originally came out for the previous release.

That said, Atlus does seem to be aware how having to rebuy DLC might not sit well with the community. The company has a special sale that sees all of the old DLC from the base game on sale for only ¥10 (or one cent). However, this sale lasts only until November 14.

Of course, Persona 5 Royal also has DLC that’s unique to it. Atlus is also selling DLC costumes for new character Kasumi Yoshizawa. However, as this is not from the base game, it isn’t covered by the discount.

All of the above applies only the the Japanese release of Persona 5 Royal. It’s still currently unknown if Persona 5 Royal‘s international release will follow in the Japanese version’s footsteps—and if Atlus will offer the same discount if it does—when it arrives sometime in the second quarter of 2020.
