Red Dead Redemption Remaster

Fan-made Red Dead Redemption Remaster reportedly killed off by Take-Two

PC gaming fans have been clamoring for a Red Dead Redemption remaster ever since Rockstar Games’ open-world Western originally released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 way back in 2010. Last year’s release of Red Dead Redemption 2 reignited hopes for a time, but alas, it still wasn’t to be. As such, a modder going by the appropriate name of “DamnedDev” took it upon themselves to remaster the classic for PC, but now they’re alleging that Rockstar parent company Take-Two has been in touch via phone to ensure that the mod is “halted completely.”

After devoting hours of hard work to the personal project—which seemed to be coming along nicely, as you can see for yourself in the reveal trailer below—DamnedDev updated their GTAForums thread in order to cryptically share the news and the fact that they are “not very happy” about the situation. The reasoning behind the sudden halt in development was soon elaborated upon after being pressed by another user, however, with the prospective Red Dead Redemption remaster developer revealing that “you know who had a hand in this… who controls R*[.]”

While not outright saying that Take-Two was responsible, the heavy insinuation is there. Whether revealing this information will prove to have been a mistake or not remains to be seen, as DamnedDev also stated that the alleged Take-Two representative “warned me to be hush” and the conversation proceeded in a fashion conducive to “usual corp greed” that “thinks they can bully you.”

This isn’t the first time that a fan-made remaster has been shut down and it most likely won’t be the last, so while the reported phone conversation isn’t officially verifiable at this stage, it doesn’t seem all that surprising or out of the question. The timing is also interesting, as evidence pointing toward a PC port of Red Dead Redemption 2 has recently begun to mount, so Take-Two may not want a free Red Dead Redemption remaster potentially taking away any of the company’s thunder.
