Super Mario Sunshine 2

Nintendo teases Super Mario Sunshine 2, Switch remake, or Odyssey DLC

Nintendo may be hinting at more sun-drenched Mario adventures. Judging by one of its latest tweets, the studio may be working on Super Mario Sunshine 2, but there is also a chance that it is teasing a Super Mario Sunshine Nintendo Switch remake or re-release.

Nintendo’s Gamescom 2019 showcase is where the first hints appeared, with summer fruit such as watermelons and pineapples scattered across the place. It wasn’t the most logical setup for games such as Luigi’s Mansion 3 or The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. These fruits prominently feature in Super Mario Sunshine, as Twitter users Gokuiio and Bassergius noticed.

But it was Nintendo of America’s tweet that sealed the deal. Featuring a relaxed Mario dressed for summer and munching on a watermelon, it says “Even Mario needs a little summer vacation! No matter where your summer odyssey took you, we hope it was filled with sunshine!”

The use of the word “Sunshine” doesn’t seem accidental at all. The not-so-subtle reference to a beloved Mario game instantly got fans excited over the prospect of a Super Mario Sunshine 2. However, the tweet also includes the word “Odyssey,” paving the way to further speculation that Nintendo could be teasing some Super Mario Sunshine DLC for Super Mario Odyssey. As far-fetched as it may sound, adding tropical Isle Delfino as downloadable content is a scenario that shouldn’t entirely be ruled out.

The idea of a Super Mario Sunshine remake for Nintendo Switch also seems very credible, considering that Nintendo isn’t a stranger to updating its titles for the newest console generation.

Super Mario Sunshine was released in 2002 for Nintendo GameCube, mostly receiving critical and commercial acclaim. With recent titles like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey taking the famous plumber into very different directions, a more breezy and colorful adventure could be in the works.
