Hyper Light Drifter cloud saves were causing crashes in the Epic Games Store, causing the company behind Fortnite and the Unreal engine to temporarily disable them. Further investigation revealed a much more serious problem and it appears that the feature is going to be gone for good — at least for now.
The issue with Hyper Light Drifter cloud saves began yesterday, when the store’s official Twitter account announced that they were disabling them “temporarily.” For one reason or another, the inclusion of this feature was causing the Epic Games Store client to crash. That’s where the roller coaster ride of announcements began.

Two hours later, the Epic Games Store Twitter had announced that it had a fix which would allow cloud saves to be re-enabled the following day. Things seemed to be going well, but the good news didn’t last for very long.
“Update: Due to additional technical limitations found while investigating this concern, we have determined that we are unable to support cloud saves for Hyper Light Drifter at this time,” read a new announcement about Hyper Light Drifter cloud saves. “We apologize for the inconvenience. We’ll also be deploying an update soon intended to prevent this crashing issue from impacting any future games with Cloud Saves.”
None of the tweets went into explicit detail about what the underlying issue (or subsequent “additional technical limitations”) was. While we do know that the cloud saves were causing problems for some users, it seems that Epic Games hasn’t yet been able to get a handle on it.
Replies to the Twitter thread are filled with the usual fare: requests for Epic Games to vault the Fortnite mech currently wreaking havoc in the latest Battle Royale season and general vitriol and banter about the Epic Games Store. Buried in the replies, however, are complaints about Cloud Saves from other users.
“I’m having problems with Limbo’s cloud saves too,” read one such reply. “Every time I launch the game I get a cloud save conflict dialog that says no local save files found.”
Judging by the commentary from users, it seems that cloud saves have been causing problems that Epic Games can’t quite figure out. Hopefully, they’ll be able to figure out the underlying problem and get a fix out to their customers sooner rather than later.
