Borderlands 3 FL4K reveal

Final Borderlands 3 Vault Hunter is FL4K the Beastmaster, an ’emergent AI’ with pet companions

2K and Gearbox Software have revealed the fourth and final playable Vault Hunter for their much-anticipated upcoming looter shooter. The Borderlands 3 FL4K the Beastmaster trailer reveals the character to be an “emergent AI” that takes three pet companions into battle with them, helping to hunt enemies during gameplay. In that aspect, FL4K seems reminiscent of the original Borderlands‘ Hunter class Vault Hunter Mordecai, who had a pet falcon which could be used to deal damage to foes and collect fallen loot.

Artificial companionship is always a smart addition where games focused on co-op play are concerned, helping even those who opt to fly solo get in on the experience. FL4K isn’t only effective in that regard, however, as a handy “Ways to Play” guide published on the official Borderlands 3 website reveals that the character can be utilized in a number of different ways, depending on your preferred play style.

Upgrading the “Hunter” skill tree grants players the “Rakk Attack!” Action Skill, which summons bat-like creatures called Rakk to divebomb enemies. At the same time, FL4K can command his pet Spiderant Centurian to attack, which it’ll do with acidic goo and melee attacks. The “Master” skill tree, on the other hand, will allow players to teleport their pet (a Guard Skag, in this case) to a specified location instantaneously, dealing radiation damage to nearby enemies in the process. The Guard Skag’s unique skills include buffing FL4K and attacking with a combination of bites and projectile vomit.

Lastly, those favoring a stealthy approach will likely want to make their way towards the “Stalker” skill tree, with the “Fade Away” ability allowing players to become temporarily invisible while regenerating health more quickly and making the next three shots guaranteed critical hits. The Stalker’s accompanying pet is the Jabber Sidekick, which boosts your movement speed and fights with a mounted gun.

FL4K the Beastmaster looks set to be a diverse choice of Vault Hunter for any Borderlands 3 player picking the game up when it launches September 13 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC as a timed Epic Games Store exclusive.
