Free-To-Play PS4 Games Don’t Require PS Plus To Play Online

Buried deep beneath the cheers of the fans over Sony's stance on used games and DRM during their E3 press conference, Sony quietly revealed that PlayStation Plus would be required for online play on the PlayStation 4. Since this model is new to PlayStation consoles, a question came up today during a meeting with SCEA's Head of Publisher and Developer Relations, Adam Boyes, about free-to-play games and if they'd truly remain "free-to-play".

Boyes revealed that while it's "ulimately up to the publishers" Sony will not require PlayStation Plus to access online free-to-play titles such as the upcoming PS4 games, Blacklight: Retribution and PlanetSide 2. So despite the PlayStation Plus subscription requirement to access online multiplayer on PS4 games, free-to-play will remain just that.

With the number of MMOs and free-to-play games coming to the PS4 constantly growing, this leeway will become increasingly important. And it's yet another way Sony is supporting developers and their projects.

We had the opportunity to speak with Adam Boyes on a number of topics, so look out for more coverage throughout the day during E3 2013.
