Gears 5 Arcade Deathmatch details revealed in new video

One of the biggest draws of the Gears of War franchise, besides its story mode, is its gruesome, fast-paced multiplayer modes. The next iteration is bringing its own version of one of the series’ tried-and-true versus experiences with the Gears 5 Arcade Deathmatch mode. And The Coalition has finally revealed some more details about it.

Packaged in a two-minute video, the Gears 5 Arcade Deathmatch mode is similar to just about any Deathmatch mode in any given shooter. The objective is to get 50 kills before the opposing team. You’ll join one of two teams, the COG or the Swarm, and work together to destroy and (probably) chainsaw the competition.

The Gears 5 Arcade Deathmatch mode looks like it’s taking some notes from shooters like Overwatch and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as you’ll choose between five characters, each with their own abilities and unlockable weapon trees. For example, Kait Diaz has improved movement speed while the series’ protagonist Marcus Fenix has a better cover slide which increases its speed and distance. While the Swarm isn’t as personable, each of the five characters will mirror one of its COG opposition. If a character’s playstyle isn’t working out for you, you can switch to a different one whenever you would like.

Arcade Deathmatch also introduces a skull-based currency reward system. As you garner kills and assists throughout the match, you’ll earn skulls. This will allow you to purchase more powerful weapons during the match, or even mid-fight. These weapon upgrades are different for each character to cater to their playing style. If (or when) you do die, your skulls will still be available to use.

Gears 5 will be coming to PC and Xbox One on September 10, 2019. It will be available on launch day through its game subscription service Xbox Game Pass. Although it is rated M for its “intense violence” and “strong language,” you can be sure that tobacco use is nowhere to be seen in the newest entry in the Gears of War franchise.
