Overwatch Role Queue role lock Leak

Overwatch role queue likely to come to game and league following leak

An Overwatch role queue and role lock leak appears to have popped up from Blizzard Entertainment of all places. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of “role queue”, it essentially means that players will have to decide between tank, DPS, or healer prior to the beginning of a match and stay in that category of hero for the entire game. Now, an accidentally-revealed episode of Watchpoint — the official show centered on the Overwatch League — has revealed that role queue is coming to the game and the league.

A submission on the /r/Overwatch subreddit had a now-deleted video highlighting the changes that would be coming to Overwatch in the near future. This Overwatch role queue leak revealed that the changes would be coming to the game itself “shortly” but that the Overwatch League would be immediately adopting it for Stage 4 going forward.

Here are the changes that are coming to the Overwatch League according to this Overwatch role queue leak:

  • All compositions are:

    2 damage heroes, 2 tanks, 2 supports
  • Players cannot change roles during a map

    Can change heroes within role
  • Players can change roles between maps
  • Facing stage, players will be seated:

    2 damage, 2 tanks, 2 supports
    • If players change roles between maps they will change seats

For us regular Joes, the idea of locking players into a 2-2-2 format has its upsides and downsides. On the one hand, the introduction of these new mechanics revealed in the Overwatch role queue leak mean that the days of 5 DPS compositions may very well be coming to an end. On the other hand, it also means that we’re going to lose a lot of flexibility in making interesting comps like the Slambulance or Triple DPS.

We should find out more details about role queue in Overwatch when the announcement is expected to be made official later today.
