Just because Shadowbringers just came out doesn’t mean that Square Enix is resting on its laurels. The game’s director has confirmed that the next Final Fantasy 14 expansion is already in development. Director Naoki Yoshida confirmed that a new Final Fantasy 14 expansion was already in development during a keynote speech at Japan Expo 2019 in Paris. In addition to this, Yoshida also asked attendees what new jobs they’d like to see in the new expansion.
According to a Reddit post, attendees asked for a healer, a beast master, as well as a chemist to be added to the popular MMO. Of course, this isn’t a guarantee that these jobs will be included in the expansion. That said, Yoshida asking attendees was a nice gesture.
Final Fantasy 14 getting an expansion after Shadowbringers should be a no-brainer. Despite a rocky launch back in 2010, the MMO has grown to be one of the largest in the market following its relaunch in 2013.
The MMORPG recently hit over 16 million players last May, a month before the launch of the latest expansion. This is quite impressive considering that it’s only currently available on two platforms: PC and PlayStation 4. Support for the game’s PlayStation 3 version ended in 2017. Meanwhile, Square Enix hasn’t released Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox One due to issues with Microsoft’s cross-play regulations.
This next Final Fantasy 14 expansion will be the fourth expansion for the game since its release when it releases. Prior to Shadowbringers, Square Enix also released two other expansions, Heavensward and Stormblood.
Each of these expansions came out about two years after the previous one. Stormblood, Shadowbringers‘ predecessor, hit in 2017, while Heavensward launched in 2014. With this in mind, it’s most likely that the next Final Fantasy 14 expansion will arrive sometime in the summer of 2021. While this may seem like a long time, fans have much to keep themselves busy with. Aside from the Shadowbringers the game is also set to receive a live-action TV series on Netflix.
