Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course delayed to 2020

The Cuphead DLC expansion Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course has been delayed to 2020. It’s been more than a year since Cuphead developer Studio MDHR originally announced the expansion in June 2018 with a vague “coming in 2019” release window.

“Our highest priority with The Delicious Last Course is making sure this new adventure meets the meticulous level of care and quality we always strive for,” Chad and Jared Moldenhauer of Studio MDHR wrote on Twitter. “It’s also important to us that we make things in a way that’s healthy and sustainable for our team.”

Along with an announcement of the delay, Studio MDHR released a trailer that gives fans a short look at some gameplay from the infamously difficult game’s DLC.

The trailer shows off a brief glimpse of two bosses—a sort of giant mountain troll creature and a snow monster—and of the new playable character Ms. Chalice in action. We also get another look at Chef Saltbaker, who appears to be the one who will send Cuphead, Mugman, and Ms. Chalice on this DLC quest.

The wait for the base Cuphead game was long: Originally revealed with a teaser trailer in 2013, Cuphead was shown off at E3 2014 (given a 2015 release window) and then again at E3 2015, where it was delayed to a 2016 release window. Then, in 2016, it was delayed yet again to 2017. The game finally released as an Xbox One and PC exclusive in September of that year. Given the game’s history and its beautiful, hand-drawn animations, it’s not surprising to see Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course delayed as well.

Cuphead eventually made its way to Mac platforms and later to the Nintendo Switch in September 2019. GameRevolution found the Switch port to be a fantastic one, calling the game “nearly flawless” and giving it a score of 5/5. We weren’t alone in enjoying the game, apparently, as it sold 3 million copies in less than a year, and has likely sold many more copies since.
