Someone remade Mario Maker 2 in LittleBigPlanet 3

LittleBigPlanet 3 user ClapTrap9 has recreated Super Mario Maker 2 in LittleBigPlanet 3 using the game’s level creation tools. ClapTrap9’s level makes it possible to use many of Super Mario Maker 2‘s elements to create and play Mario levels within the PlayStation-exclusive platformer.

The level, discovered by GameXplain, features a very similar user interface to Super Mario Maker 2 and contains backgrounds and sprites based on the Super Mario World style. Unlike the real Super Mario Maker 2, it’s not possible to switch to game styles other than Super Mario World, but ClapTrap9’s level does feature a few different course themes, such as desert and snow. Players can also switch their creations to night mode. The level allows the placement of many of the new elements introduced in the Super Mario Maker sequel with physics similar to the real game, including seesaws, the Angry Sun and the on/off switch.

According to GameXplain, Mario’s jumping physics and other details of the recreation don’t work quite as they do in the real Super Mario Maker 2, and some lag and screen tearing is visible in GameXplain’s video. Still, ClapTrap9’s feat is still quite impressive.

The craziest part about this recreation is that, according to GameXplain, ClapTrap9 is just 14 years old. This isn’t the first Mario Maker level ClapTrap9 has created, either. Last month, GameXplain covered a similar level of ClapTrap9’s which recreated the first Super Mario Maker in LittleBigPlanet 3. This previous level features Super Mario Maker elements in the original Super Mario Bros. style and only allows switching from the default game theme to the underground theme.

LittleBigPlanet 3 developer Media Molecule recently released Dreams, a game with far more advanced creation tools than LittleBigPlanet 3, in early access. Players have used Dreams, essentially more of a full-fledged development tool than a game, to recreate parts of games like Silent Hill 2 and Spider-Man (2018), so it’s likely only a matter of time before someone (maybe even ClapTrap9) uses Dreams to recreate a more complete version of Super Mario Maker 2.
